Pineapple House
Small hotel/guest house set on the hill side above Falmouth harbour on the road to Pigeon Beach, with a definite world travel feel. There is a large communal room in the main building and a number of very open air bungalows on the grounds. It is a welcoming place in a very casual sense, run by one of the Nicholson daughters, attracting a good number of long term residents in search of a more hedonistic lifestyle.

Paige Pond Country Inn
On the side road to St Johns in the village of Buckley, this simple rural hotel is not devoid of charm.... and you can not get any further away from the sea in Antigua! Plus it is cheap at about 60 US a double. There are good view on the southern hills, but it is a bit - quite a bit- of a lonely spot.

West Coast Beaches, Five Islands and Dickensons and other options
There are a few 'non resort' options on the west coast, some certainly worth the effort. Antigua Nice displays a good selection of budget hotels (budget by Antigua standards, that is). Check them out here.
Camping
Is not allowed on the Island. However... in a practical way, secluded beaches are perfectly ok to sleep on (no, we are not talking about camping), as long as you do not get noticed. On these, sandflies and other creepy crawlies can be a bit of a problem without a tent so bring one just in case, but purely of course as a mean to keep insects at bay.
As a matter of fact, you can camp overnight in plenty of places in Antigua, as long as you are away from habitations and your camp fire does not attract too much attention. Fancy a bonfire at the top of Signal Hill? maybe not a good idea, but a small fire on the slopes bellow might just be ok.
