Eating out Antigua wide

Harmony Hall

About an hour away from Falmouth (see Half Moon Bay bicycle ride) this boutique hotel/ restaurant/ art center is worth a visit. The setting is great on a small ledge overlooking Non Such bay, simple and tasteful with a terrace set  in lush gardens next to a refurbished sugar cane windmill. The food is pretty good though definitely on the expensive side, but if you are going to splurge and indulge, this is a nice place to do so.

OJ's

Of the beach restaurants between Cades Bay and Jolly Harbour,  OJ's is probably the overall best. This beach shack styled place has a pleasant atmosphere, enjoys a great spot on a nice stretch of beach, serves decent food and is not overpriced. These four characteristics are rarely found together here and that makes it a winner, even if by default.

Russell's

I have a soft spot for Russell's in fort St James. This is a simple restaurant, set in a fantastic location next to Fort St James at the northern headland of St John's harbour.  The views of the bay from the terrace are stunning, and the building housing the restaurant has been nicely restored. Most of all, the menu is good, varried, and a large portion of the patrons are local people rather then tourists. There are bands playing some evenings. Russell's is closed for Sunday lunch.

Tast
e of India

This is Antigua's prime Indian cuisine spot. Set in a petrol station close to the center of St John's, it can hardly be considered to be a romantic venue.  Yet the dining room is perfectly adequate, the curries are good- they even have a tandoor oven- and this is a great place for a complete escape from the Antigua yachting comunity. The restaurant can be quite busy as it is popular with students from the Medical School and other expats.

Do it Yourself

If you want a nice day out without breaking the bank, DIY is best (antipodeans will get the jist of this straight away; they invented it in the first place):  get a sober volunteer to drive to the fish market (by the bus station) in St John's early Saturday morning, preferably before 7:30 am. Buy all the fish you can eat (at about 20 EC per pound in weight for live lobsters, red snappers etc... you can go for it big time!). Go home, take your barbie and eski for a picnic to one of the deserted spots, beaches, summit or wherever appeals to you (a grood easy option is Rendez-vous bay) and have a day out...
